One of the more obscure grape varieties grown in Monterey County, the Souzao (su-zow´) originates from Portugal. This vigorous growing vine produces one of the only grapes in which the juice contains pigment. In Portugal, this grape type is commonly used to produce Port. The Souzao is blended along with several other native varieties to make these world-famous fortified wines. Interestingly enough, in Portugal, Souzao is used mostly for the brilliant rich color it imparts into the port wines. In Monterey County, the grape is utilized for its great color but also its flavor components. Monterey County Souzao produces excellent port-styled wines. Luscious fruit characters abound in the Souzao Ports. Raisin, Black Cherry Preserves and Black Licorice typify port wines made with this grape.
