People Are Sideways Over PDF Print E-mail
The Oscar winning movie Sideways is a hot topic in wine tasting rooms these days.  People often ask me if I have noticed an impact on Pinot Noir sales since the film hit the big screen.  I’ll share with you what I tell them. The Oscar winning movie Sideways is a hot topic in wine tasting rooms these days.  People often ask me if I have noticed an impact on Pinot Noir sales since the film hit the big screen.  I’ll share with you what I tell them.

I personally don’t believe that our sales of this varietal have been greatly affected by the hype Sideways has created.  As one of the state’s top producers of Pinot Noir, Monterey County is already known as a mecca for delicious Pinot.  Consequently, many local Pinots have been in demand for years.   Pinot’s existing popularity has also encouraged many winemakers to begin producing this varietal, thus driving up the availability and exposure of the wine. So, it strikes me that the movie is more a reflection of current trends than a trend-setter.  However, it is possible that the film has at least caused people to be more aware of the grape, excited to try it, and pronouncing it correctly (Pee-no No-wah).

I must admit that Pinot Noir has indeed become my favorite varietal since moving to Monterey a few years ago.  It is so versatile that it pairs well with most dishes and has many flavors to offer.  From gamey, rich pinots (like Talbott’s CASE) to smooth, sophisticated pinots like Scheid (the People’s Choice winner in November), I enjoy them all!  Not surprisingly, Monterey County has the distinction of being home to some of the most expensive Pinot vineyards in the nation, notably Garys’ vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands.   A Taste of Monterey carries several labels from Garys’ vineyard, so take advantage of your club discount and try some!  I’m off to drink a glass of this tasty red beverage myself.  Cheers!
