Refosco is a wine that I am sure you are not familiar with. I was not either, before I tried it a few years ago. It appears that there are only a small handful of California Refosco wines made. Refosco is a red grape variety originating in the Friuli region of northeast Italy. The French counterpart to Refosco is Mondeuse, technically called Mondeuse Noir where is it often lightened up a bit by blending in small amounts of Gamay or Pinot Noir. Refosco is typically late-ripening, producing deeply colored, medium to full-bodied wines with crisp acidity. The wine displays intense dark purple color, with intriguing herbal notes to the nose and a background of plums and roasted coffee. On the palate, the rich, full mouth is dominated by plum and black cherry. The finish is lingering and mouth-filling. Other than Spice-Rubbed Turkey, the wine is delicious with rich pasta dishes, barbecued or grilled chicken, and pork, lamb and beef. I like to describe this wine as Chianti on steroids. The impressive backbone of this wine will allow it to age nicely over the next 5-7 years. The intense fruit character will compliment a broad range of spices and herbs found at the Thanksgiving table. |
